What is Reverse Line Movement?

Reverse Line Movement happens when most of the bets are on one team, but the betting line moves toward the other team. Normally a line moves toward the side getting the most action. When it moves the opposite way, it is "reverse."

A simple example

A spread opens at Team A -3. 75% of bets come in on Team A. You would expect the line to grow to -3.5 or -4. Instead it drops to Team A -2.5. That is Reverse Line Movement: the line moved against the popular side.

Why does it happen?

Bet percentage counts tickets, not dollars. A smaller number of large bets can outweigh many small ones, so the share of money can point a different way than the share of bets. Books also adjust lines for injuries, weather and their own risk.

How GregCity shows it

Each Reverse Line Movement entry lists the open line, the current line, the bet percentage, the money percentage, and a one-sentence note on what the data shows. We only list a game when we have real bet and money splits plus open and current lines. It is data, not a prediction: Reverse Line Movement does not guarantee any result.
